The workshop

Welcome to A.J. Barnard Engineering.

The core of the business is historic race and rally car building, preparation and restoration. Engines, transmissions, suspension and brakes are built and set up in house.

Work ranges from a bare shell, up to a race or rally car, to a service on a standard road car. Restorations have been completed to award-winning standards for customers in the UK, Europe and Japan.

Since 1971

Our story.

Tony Barnard started the business in April 1971, after working at Nerus Engineering on BMC tuning and at Elva Cars on the McLaren-Elva sports racers. In 1990 the workshop moved to Udiam Farm Oast, Bodiam, and the focus turned to historic race, rally and restoration work.

Peter Barnard joined his father in 1996, having helped in the workshop from an early age; he stripped his first MGB engine at nine. Peter raced the workshop's cars to the MGCC Thoroughbreds Championship in 2013, and later bought the business from Tony. He runs it today.
